Overview

The Citizen's Police Academy provides community members with an inside look at the Laconia Police Department. The purpose of the academy is to increase understanding between the citizens through education and interaction with members of the Laconia Police Department. The Academy gives citizen an opportunity to learn why we "can" and/or "cannot" do certain things. It is hoped that the instruction will increase police awareness and dispel suspicions and misconceptions and increase police/community rapport through this educational program.

Academy Structure

The Department conducts one Academy class per year, usually in the fall. The Academy meets once a week on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Laconia Police Department unless otherwise noted.

During the 10-week program, students will be taught by police executives, veteran police officers, civilians and volunteers from the law enforcement community. The participants will have the opportunity to meet with the Chief of Police and staff members. Students are encouraged to participate and ask questions and express ideas and concerns to their instructors. Applicants will be asked to commit to full attendance of all scheduled classes.

Selection Process

Anyone over 18 years of age who lives, works or attends school in Laconia may apply. Classes are limited to 15 people and participants are selected on a first come, first serve basis. Due to the sensitive nature of some of the information that will be taught, a background investigation will be conducted on all applicants. Applicants having any of the following will not be considered:

• Felony or domestic violence related convictions
• Violent Misdemeanor convictions
• Anyone currently on probation or parole
